About the Performers

Bear Williams Band

The Bear Williams Story begins in Arkansas where Bear’s Mother and Father were born. Bear was a fun loving kid with a zest for life and music. Some of his musical influences were Blues Legends, Robert Johnson, Howling Wolf, R.L. Burnside, Son House, and other great Master Musical Storytellers. Bear grew up in the Northern Mecca for Blues, Jazz and Rock Music, Chicago, Illinois.

Bear’s birth name is Larry Kimpel, and it is by that name that he has been known throughout the music industry for over two decades . Bear spent 25 years in Los Angeles, California touring and recording with A List Musicians and Artists, like Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, George Duke, Boney James, Mavis Staples and The Staple Singers, Larry Carlton, Anita Baker, and a host of other well-known names.

How did the whole name change come about? Bear explains… “It was the Fall of 2015 and my then Fiancee’ (Dee) told me that I was her ‘Big Ole’ Bear!’ Well, people began calling me ‘Bear’ and the name just stuck! I added my mother’s maiden name of Williams and the rest is now history. My first Country/Blues/Rock CD, called Waters of Love, is being releases September 9th on GVR Records.”

The Bear Williams Sound is a merging of southern roots music and country, coupled with the urban feel of the Blues Music of Chicago.

As a young teenager, Bear had the honor of attending the funeral of Legendary Blues Man, Howling Wolf. Says Bear, “It was the Winter of 76′ and I remember my high school band director telling my class to go up to a local funeral home after school that day and pay our respects to a musical legend. But, he didn’t let any of us know who we were going to see there.

“After school, I walked into the A.R. Leak Funeral Home on 78th and Cottage Grove in Chicago. I remember going through two big white doors and seeing a casket in the front of the room flanked by flowers. Organ music was playing solemnly in the background. There were mourners all around and everyone was crying. I I walked to the front of the room and shook the hands of those family in the front row. Before heading for home, I wrote my name in the guestbook and a couple of weeks later, I received a handwritten note in the mail that said, “Thank you for attending the Funeral of Chester A. Burnett AKA Howlin’ Wolf.”

Fast forward to today, and Bear Williams is sharing his special brand of music with the world, just as Howlin’ Wolf did. And Bear Williams hopes that in some small way to inspire young Blues Musicians to do the same.

The Smiley Tillmon Band

One of the busiest blues outfits in Chicagoland, the Smiley Tillmon Band is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. There’s an obvious reason why the veteran guitarist’s booking schedule is so jam-packed: Smiley knows how to have a good time and makes sure his audience does too. After 55 years on the local blues scene, Tillmon serves up the blues and soul standards that people never seem to stop craving, his rich vocals and fluid guitar backed by a band that keeps his grooves tight and right.

Born Moses Tillmon in rural Jefferson County, Georgia, Smiley grew up on a hearty musical diet of gospel, country, and a little blues. His mother moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was ten; there he was exposed to calypso music, adding up to a singular list of influences. Tillmon took up guitar and was good enough by the dawn of the ‘60s to back Miami R&B singer Billy Miranda in the studio. He joined Sammy Ambrose & the Afro-Beats, a calypso-oriented band, touring from Canada to New York. Smiley bid the Afro-Beats adieu in 1962 and moved to Chicago. There he established himself on the blues circuit, playing with Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Denise LaSalle, and other South Side luminaries until he opted for a day job in 1977.

Upon his 2007 retirement, Smiley reverted to full-time musical status. He joined forces with bassist Tom Rezetko, and they’ve been inseparable onstage ever since. Kate Moss shares guitar duties with Tillmon; married to another blues guitar standout, Nick Moss, Kate’s sound is heavily influenced by Freddie King and Magic Sam (she fell in love with the blues at age 21 when she met Buddy Guy, and she’s shared stages with Buddy, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Shaw, and Lurrie Bell, just to name a few). Drummer George Baumann completes one of the Windy City’s toughest blues combos, one that’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear.

About the Performers

Gizzae

Gizzae is truly a band of the world – With musicians hailing from the four corners of the Earth, Rocket and Gizzae have been playing for crowds across the country for over 35 years! Their musical experiences have collectively earned them Grammy® awards, Chicago Music Awards and they have opened for some of the biggest names in Reggae. They have also recorded and played professionally with such acts as:

Ziggy Marley, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Third World, Toots and Maytals, Burning Spear, Carly Simon, The Talking Heads, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Chachi, Michael Black, Moja Nya, Dallol, Rude Beat Society, The Mighty Baron of Trinidad, Bell Combo and many others.

Working and playing with such a vast array of musical styles and talents has enabled Gizzae to create a unique blend of Roots Reggae.

Gizzae’s brand of jam-reggae is always backed with strong guitar solos and riffing, warm pads and ambient vibes from the dual keyboardists.

Some songs are heavily influenced by Soca and Calypso and other genres such as jazz and even rock. Just when you think you’ve heard everything Gizzae has to offer, the band instinctively and seamlessly transitions into Bob Marley reggae/blues finale to satisfy the keyboard and guitar solo fans. This is the way to see a Chicago reggae band!

Formed in 1992 after the breakup of Dallol (Ziggy Marley’s Touring Band) and Moja Nya (New York), Gizzae soon became a fan favorite in the Chicago and Midwest reggae scene. A Sunday night staple at the fledgling Wild Hare, fans started to come out to hear this new reggae band in force and 25 years later, they still rock the house.

If you like live jams and wicked solos, come dance the night away with Gizzae!

Dos Santos

Dos Santos is a quintet based in Chicago. Their elasticity & consistency in live performance and their recorded output have garnered them wide attention as one of the city’s most potent, impactful performers. Collectively raised through the pedagogy of American popular and traditional Latin music, their future-minded sound gestures forward into an idealized new progressive American music, as rooted in Chicago as it is communicable with the world.

After making their debut in May of 2013, Dos Santos has been steadily making the rounds at Chicago’s premiere live music venues and festivals—from the prestigious Millennium Park Summer Music Series to the exclusive Chicago World Music Festival. In March of 2015, they released their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut cd Dos Santos and subsequently toured the United States, making appearances at SXSW, the Pachanga Latino Music Festival, and the Ruido Fest Latin Alternative Music Festival along the way. In 2016, the band released their follow-up EP entitled “Fonografic” on Electric Cowbell Records produced by Beto Martínez of Grammy Award-winning Grupo Fantasma. And in 2017 they teamed up with Money Chicha to release a 7″ vinyl split entitled “Summit Sessions” on Sonorama Discos. Stay tuned for their International Anthem debut LP—out in June 2018.

The group’s five members (Peter Vale, Alex Chavez, Daniel Villarreal-Carrillo, Jaime Garza, Nathan Karagianis) have their own storied careers in a range of styles—including jazz, R&B/soul, traditional Mexican folk, punk, cumbia, salsa, and electronica—in addition to a history of critical involvement in arts education and social justice organizing.

About the Performers

Tinsley Ellis

Since his Alligator debut 30 years ago, Southern blues-rock guitar wizard, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis has become a bona fide worldwide guitar hero. The Chicago Sun-Times says, “It’s hard to overstate the raw power of his music.” Now, he makes his triumphant return to Alligator Records with a powerful new album, Winning Hand. Armed with his signature molten licks, melodic riffs and rousing, intense solos, Ellis, as his legions of fans will attest, is among the blues world’s best-loved, hardest working and most well-travelled statesmen. He has performed in all 50 United States as well as in Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and South America, earning legions of fans with his guitar virtuosity, passionate vocals and memorable original songs. Ellis is also revered as a guitarist’s guitarist, with famous friends including Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Oliver Wood, Jonny Lang and members of Widespread Panic calling on him to sit in and jam. “A musician never got famous staying home,” he says.

Recorded in Nashville and produced by Ellis and keyboardist Kevin McKendree, the ten brilliantly performed, fervently sung tracks on Winning Handinclude nine originals, ranging from blistering blues to heart-pounding rock to soulful ballads. As his only cover song, Ellis pays tribute to his greatest guitar-playing and songwriting influences with a Freddie King-inspired version of rock legend Leon Russell’s “Dixie Lullaby.” “Guitar, guitar, guitar is what this album is all about,” says Ellis, who recorded primarily with his 1959 Fender Stratocaster, his 1967 Gibson ES 345 and his 1973 Les Paul Deluxe. Guitar World says, “Ellis’ playing sparkles with depth and subtlety. Whether playing deep, slow blues or uptempo rockers, Ellis rides a gorgeously fat, pure tone.”

Born in Atlanta in 1957, Ellis was raised in southern Florida. He discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds, The Animals, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like The Allman Brothers. One night he and a friend were listening to records when his friend’s older brother told them if they liked blues, they should really be listening to B.B. King. As luck would have it, King was in town for a week, and the upcoming Saturday afternoon show was just for teenagers.

Tinsley and his friend went, sitting transfixed in the front row. When B.B. broke a string on Lucille, he changed it without missing a beat, and handed the broken string to Ellis. After the show, B.B. came out and talked with fans, mesmerizing Tinsley with his warmth and kindness. Tinsley’s fate was now sealed; he had to become a blues guitarist. He saw Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and every other blues artist who came through town, always sitting up front, always waiting to meet the artists, take photos, get autographs. And yes, he still has B.B.’s string.

Already an accomplished teenaged musician, Ellis left Florida and returned to Atlanta in 1975. He soon joined a gritty local blues band, the Alley Cats. In 1981, along with veteran blues singer and harpist Chicago Bob Nelson, Tinsley formed The Heartfixers, a group that would become Atlanta’s top-drawing blues band. After cutting a few Heartfixers albums for the Landslide label, Ellis was ready to head out on his own.

Georgia Blue, Tinsley’s first Alligator release, hit the unprepared public by surprise in 1988. Critics and fans quickly agreed that a new and original guitar hero had emerged. The Chicago Tribune said, “Tinsley Ellis torches with molten fretwork. Ellis takes classic, Southern blues-rock workouts and jolts them to new life with a torrid ax barrage.” Tinsley’s next four releases—1989’s Fanning The Flames, 1992’s Trouble Time, 1994’s Storm Warning, and 1997’s Fire It Up—further grew his fan base and his fame. Features and reviews ran in Rolling Stone, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and in many other national and regional publications.

Guests including Peter Buck (R.E.M.), guitarist Derek Trucks (who made his recording debut with Tinsley at age 14) and keyboardist Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones) have joined him in the studio. Ellis’ song “A Quitter Never Wins” was recorded by Jonny Lang, selling over a million copies. He in turn has made guest appearances on albums by The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Colonel Bruce Hampton and others. Producers Eddy Offord (John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Yes) and even the legendary Tom Dowd (The Allman Brothers, Ray Charles) helped Ellis hone his studio sound.

A move to Capricorn Records in 2000 saw Ellis revisiting his Southern roots. In 2002, he joined the Telarc label, producing two well-received albums of soul-drenched blues-rock. He returned to Alligator in 2005, releasing Live-Highwayman, which captured the crowd-pleasing energy of his live shows. He followed it with two more incendiary studio releases, 2007’s Moment Of Truth and 2009’s Speak No Evil. He has since self-released four successful albums on his own Heartfixer label.

Over the course of his career, Ellis has shared stages with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Otis Rush, Willie Dixon, The Allman Brothers, Leon Russell, Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins and many others. Whether he’s on stage with his own band or jamming with artists like Buddy Guy, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov’t Mule or Widespread Panic, he always plays with grit, soul and unbridled passion. Back home on Alligator Records with his new album and a massive live tour in the works, Tinsley Ellis is ready to prove again that whenever he picks up a guitar, he’s playing with a winning hand. – Alligator Records

Nooky Jones

After 3 years of captivating audiences with their unique blend of soul, jazz, and undertones of hip-hop, Minneapolis-based Nooky Jones are released their debut self-titled album on July 28, 2017 via Young And Foolish Records.  A truly cohesive collection of love stories and music that takes listeners to beautiful places alongside deeply provocative characters, the album is a much needed artistic expression of self for vocalist/frontman Cameron Kinghorn.

Raised in Circle Pines, a far-out suburb of Minneapolis, Kinghorn came up in a devoutly Mormon household.  He started piano lessons at age 4, but it was in the church where he began learning about harmony.  By the time he hit elementary school, Kinghorn was reading sheet music in choir and learning all of the harmonizing parts to each song, a talent that manifests itself in the intricate layered vocals of his band’s debut album.  Additionally, his mother was an important influence, teaching him that music about more than notes on the page.  She attended all of his concerts and provide detailed feedback, always emphasizing the importance of  passion in performance.

In public school, Cameron had a unique experience as both a Mormon and one of the few students of color in an extremely homogenized community.  After high school, rather than enter the Mormon mission, something expected of 19-year-old men, he attended the University of Minnesota where his eyes were opened to an entirely different world; one where he met and befriended a diverse mix of people from varied ethnic and religious backgrounds as well as sexual orientations.  In addition to new social norms, Kinghorn discovered a deeper personal passion for music, regularly sneaking into rehearsal rooms after hours and playing piano until 2am.

In early 2014, a year after Kinghorn graduated from the U of M, drummer Reid Kennedy and trumpet player Adam Meckler were on a flight home from a gig in New Orleans when they bonded over a shared love of certain musical genres and styles.  Eventually the conversation turned from, “hey do you dig this, and do you dig that?” to “we should start a band where we put all of those sounds together.”  Almost instantly Meckler suggested they tap Cameron Kinghorn to front their soon-to-be-founded band.  When you see Nooky Jones now, it’s obvious that he is the only man for the job, but at the time, Kinghorn was mostly working as a trumpet player and singing in cover bands around town.  This sort of artistic development would be a new effort for the 24 year old musician.

Soon Kinghorn would find himself sitting at a piano with Meckler and Kennedy, a gifted multi-instrumentalist in his own right, who started throwing idea after idea at him and said, “if you’re feeling it, sing.”  Kinghorn recalls, “These are the dudes I look up to in town, and they’re just putting me on the spot.  At first it was a test of my confidence.”  But as soon he started singing, everyone in the room instantly knew they were on to something.  “It was like we all had a desire for this sound, but didn’t really know exactly what it was until we heard it that day.”

Quickly Cameron and Reid forged a special musical partnership, writing song after song together.  Had he entered the mission, Cameron would have been forbidden from listening to “music that pulls your thoughts away from your work, merely entertains, [or]  has romantic lyrics or overtones…”  Instead, through the writing process, Kinghorn was celebrating without shame the vibrant world that was revealed to him as a young man out on his own.

With a collection of original songs in hand, Kennedy, Meckler, and Kinghorn teamed up with bassist Andrew Foreman, keyboardist Kevin Gastonguay, and trombonist Ryan Christianson to further explore sonic possibilities.   “We never really had a conversation about our vision or anything like that.  When it came time to build out the band, we just found the best possible players and it clicked right away,” recalls Kinghorn.

Produced over the course of 15 months at RiverRock Studios and The Hideaway in Northeast Minneapolis, the band’s debut album relies on each musician’s unique style as a critical part of the overall sound.  Atop airtight yet comfortably loose drum and bass grooves often reminiscent of 90s R&B and Hip-Hop, layers of harmonically complex piano, organ, and Fender Rhodes create a lushness associated with jazz that rarely integrates into pop music so tastefully.  Adding flairs of excitement throughout, the trumpet/trombone duo of Meckler and Christianson bring their powerful chops to the forefront when appropriate without ever stepping on the vocals, which float effortlessly from deep sultry textures to a silky smooth falsetto on par with the best soul crooners in the business.  A non-stop rollercoaster of emotions, the album masterfully draws the listener in with slow burns that eventually boil over, only to be brought back down and start over again.

TreeHouse!

For nearly seven years, the guys from TreeHouse! have spent the majority of their days as road warriors blazing sprawls of highway and at night playing an unapologetic enthusiastic blend of reggae jam rock they are know for in venues across the nation.

TreeHouse! songs resonate in your soul.  With lyrics filled with rising above adversity, gratitude, and unity. For every setback, there’s a step up waiting for you if you keep your focus. For every day, there’s a blessing to count and for every event, we must recognize we are a part of it all. It’s this kind of message that makes the most recent studio album, Lifted, their strongest release to date.

“The message of Lifted is best portrayed in the simple words inside the cover: Love. Peace. Gratitude. Compassion. Positivity. Awareness. Empowerment. Awakening. Enlightenment. Our endeavor is whatever we can do to realize and actualize these concepts within this world” says Frontman Jeremy Anderson

In 2010, lead singer Jeremy Anderson and drummer Trey Moody formed the foundation of the  American Reggae Jam Rock band TreeHouse! With a high five and a dream, they jumped into a passenger van to travel the country and share their good vibes.  Along the way they picked up fellow band member Joe Harley on Keyboards/Theramin/Vocals.

Throughout the years, the band has collaborated with other up and coming artists in the genre including Sun-Dried Vibes, Oogee Wawa, and others, building a like minded community they call “Brother Bands. ”

“We use the term “Brother Band” for any band with which we frequently work and vibe together. We often only work with other bands who work as hard as us, so our Brother Bands are those on the same long path. We use this term to indicate the Family vibe and cohesiveness of our scene of mostly East Coast Reggae Rock bands, with the idea that we can all do more together than we can alone. We have a nice community building around this idea. The Family-Community Vibe is one of the most important messages we can portray in the ultimate endeavor of Unity and One Love.”

After teaming up with musical idols like The Wailers, 311, Dirty Heads, Pepper, Stick Figure and SOJA along their journey and in the spirit of the bands who laid the road before them, these road warriors continue to spread their roots coast to coast.

The TreeHouse! single, “Blessings” was picked by Stephen Marley and Ky-Mani Marley as one of the top 10 songs out of hundreds of contestants in the Marley’s Music Uprising, because they felt this song exemplified the spirit of Bob Marley.

“I drive long hours, I carry heavy equipment, and I fully exert myself every night, but I see these experiences as training and growth, and I find peace and joy in them before we even get on stage for the fun part. The live show itself heals me every night. I write these songs, to some extent, for my own sake. If I am to sing this song every night, I try to make it beneficial for my own being and implant within it a message that I may need to hear, myself, for reassurance in my journey. Whenever we are feeling overwhelmed with our path, someone comes like a messenger from the universe and feels the need to express how much we’ve affected their life for the better, just by doing what we do. That’s what always keeps us going.”

TreeHouse! is currently in the studio working on a new album to be released in 2018.

Melody Angel

My mother named me Melody Angel, and the rest is history…

Nina Simone said something in the 60s, that resonated with me so much that it changed the course of my life forever. She showed me that singing my truth could help free and inspire my people. One voice could change the world!

Nina Simone said, ” I chose to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That to me is my duty.”

Melody Angel is not a stage name, its the name on my birth certificate. I was born and raised on the south-side of Chicago. I started singing at 7 yrs old, and when I was 13 my mama bought me, my first guitar from the local pawn shop. I dedicated my every day and night to teaching myself to play. Once I learned 5 Jimi Hendrix song’s I put my first band together and I never looked back. I played mostly covers until I found the courage to say what was really on my heart. I’ve recently released my first EP, “In This America”. I’ve recently played the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy’s Legends, and Antone’s in Austin TX.

Growing up in Chicago is really hard on a young black kid. I had to deal with so much injustice and flat out racism, that I thought that was all the world would ever show me. Music saved me from that hopeless reality, and took me all over the world! The truth of my history, and my present circumstance empowers me to walk this earth with my head held high, because I know survival is in my blood. Knowledge is my power and I want to feed that knowledge to my community, the only way I know how, and that’s with a microphone at my lips and a Fender Strat in my hand.

Bobby McClendon

Hard work, determination, and sacrifice define Bobby McClendon. Years of hard work and a determination to succeed at the highest level have paved the way and sharpened the skills of this artist. After relocating to Nashville 4 years ago by way of Yuma, Arizona, Bobby has toured the country, honing his craft on stages large and small, developing one of the most dynamic live shows in any genre of music.

The list of those that Bobby has shared the stage with continues to grow- Little Big Town, Jason Aldean, Lauren Alaina, Michael Ray, Old Dominion, Thomas Rhett, Ryan Hurd, Lee Brice, Dustin Lynch, and Kane Brown to name a few.

Bobby McClendon and his backing band he calls the Dirt Road Cartel, are the total package—great vocals, world-class energetic live show, a unique look and charisma to burn, as well as a wealth of experience and a work ethic that impresses everyone.

Along with his amped-up live show, Bobby and the DRC’s incredible sound and harmonies allows them to continue the winning of fans city after city.

“I walk out, take one look at the crowd and attack. I never let up, whether it’s a thirty-minute opening slot for a headliner or a four-hour show. The energy stays cranked up the entire time.” Behind that energy is a world of industry knowledge put to good use. “I put time, effort, passion, drive, determination, creativity and initiative into making my ideas, music and dreams become reality every single time I step on a stage.”

As Bobby McClendon takes his music nationwide, his style being compared to the likes of a country combination consisting of: Jason Aldean, Tim Mcgraw, Gary Allan, Kenny Chesney and Chris Ledoux, his unique style of country rock sets him apart from all other performers. Miss Tess & The Talkbacks

Miss Tess got her musical start at home in Maryland, her childhood nights ending in music. Her parents would sing her to sleep with the gentle, tender sounds of American folk songs, occasionally interrupted by their 30s swing band rehearsing in the basement. Tess studied piano as a child, and continued on as a teenager to take up the guitar and singing, and eventually began her own studies in early jazz and blues. All grown up and currently living in Nashville, Miss Tess and her band regularly steal the show at venues with something a little rowdier and more eclectic. Infused with classic country and honky-tonk, southern rhythm & blues, New Orleans jazz and swing, and sounds of swamp pop and early rock n’ roll, she is an embodiment of everything that it still home-grown in America.

On her newest release Baby, We All Know, Miss Tess continues to explore her own personal crossroads of American roots music. This full-length release features eleven finely crafted and well-sung original songs. Heightened by Tess’ prowess on her Weymann archtop guitar, she is accompanied by top-notch musicians, featuring her touring guitar player ace and co-conspirator Thomas Bryan Eaton. The songs were further enlivened with piano, organ, pedal steel, and fiddle in the studio.

Tess says “I consider this my best yet collection of original music. In writing these tunes I stepped out of myself and into many different characters, based on real life and my imagination, and pulled sounds and stories from my musical fantasy land. Baby, we all know their secrets and on goings, in a world of mischief and fun.” These songs were penned at Tess’s yearly writing retreat in New Hampshire, and at her home in Nashville. Yet time and place don’t bear much relevance here; the subjects she speaks through live in the streets of New Orleans, in the backwoods hollers of Tennessee, on a train heading to Mexico, and under the sheets.

About the Performers

Kofi & The New Roots Band

Kofi hails from Dominica, the “Nature Isle” of the Caribbean, and is one of the original, founding members of Roots, Stem, & Branches (RSB Band). Between 1983 and 2000, RSB released 10 albums that feature reggae, soca and zouk, the native music of Dominica. RSB toured extensively, playing in Canada, England, and throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean islands. RSB opened for numerous artists including Ziggy Marley, Bunny Wailer, Culture, Dennis Brown, and Shinehead.

Since settling in Chicago in 2003, Kofi has performed throughout the Chicago area and the Midwest. In recent years, he has devoted his music writing and performance skills to the genre he is most passionate about: roots reggae.

Kofi dazzles audiences with his joyful, energetic style, and his conscious lyrics about serious issues. His performances uplift people and encourage the celebration of life. Kofi’s long-awaited solo album “New Name” has just been released on the New Roots label, and features a great new set of serious roots reggae with a little ska, dancehall, and lovers rock thrown into the mix.

Chicago Afrobeat Project

The story of Chicago Afrobeat Project begins a short 15 years ago.

In 2002, a group of musicians sharing a common interest in West African rhythms met to jam in a West side artist loft on Chicago’s Lake Street. Quickly they realized that mixing afrobeat with Chicago house, indie rock, hip-hop, or jazz opened new avenues for experimentation. Something clicked. The group had found a collective calling.

Fast-forward 15 years, hundreds of tour dates, and four studio releases, and the group has found ways of interpreting afrobeat through American urban sounds. Through it all, CAbP has been at the center of the emergence of the North American afrobeat scene. In its newest release, What Goes Up(September 29, 2017) the band features special guest and legendary innovative drummer Tony Allen, as well as many Chicago vocalists and MCs.

Allen, once exclaimed by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” plays kit on all 10 tracks, recording his signature beats behind the band and vocalists. This collaboration makes Chicago Afrobeat Project the first American afrobeat band to produce a full-length studio record with Tony Allen.

Taking the vocal helm on the album are Akenya (Noname, Chance the Rapper), JC Brooks, Kiara Lanier, Legit (Chance the Rapper), Ugochi, Oranmiyan and Rico Sisney/Maggie Vagle (Sidewalk Chalk). The band’s new vocal-laden approach makes the songs of What Goes Up concise and intentional, and markedly different from CAbP’s prior recordings.

A staple of the American live music scene for years, the band’s live show now combines its historically instrumental style with the new vocal approach. Crowds feed off the spontaneity of the soloists and enthusiasm of the band.

Chicago Afrobeat Project has been a 100% independent artist since day one, with its new release What Goes Up following suit.

About the Performers

Demetria Taylor

Demetria Taylor is the seventh child of eight from the family of the late blues legend Eddie Taylor Sr. and is helping keep the legacy of her father alive.

Eddie is best known as the rhythm guitarist in the band of Jimmy Reed but he also had his own solo career and recorded some wonderful sides for the VJ label including the classic “Bad Boy”. Her mother Vera Taylor was also a blues singer. Demetria has fond memories of blues greats and friends of the family coming by the house– including Floyd Jones, Carey Bell, Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Littlejohn, Sam Lay, Willie Kent, Tail Dragger, Eddie Shaw, Johnny B. Moore and Magic Slim.
Born in Chicago, Demetria grew up surrounded by Blues music listening on records to her biggest influences including Etta James, Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton and most importantly, “The Queen of The Blues” Koko Taylor (no relation to the Eddie Taylor family).

Demetria started playing drums at age 14, coached by her older brothers Larry and Tim, both professional blues drummers. She played in family shows across Chicago which also featured brother Eddie Taylor Jr. on guitar. She also sang in the gospel choir at Trinity All Nations Church on Chicago’s south side.

“I put God first and everything else will work out”, says Demetria, who is married with eight children. “I feel that singing is something I was born to do. Sometimes on the stage my eyes tear up as I feel the music I’m singing. I love to listen to all types of music, but the blues caught my ear. I’ll never give up my dream.”

Demetria has toured nationally and internationally and performs in many clubs and festivals including the Chicago Blues Festival. Her first album, Bad Girl, is on Delmark Records.  Demetria was nominated in 2012  Blues Music Awards for “Best New Debut Artist”.

Leilani Kilgore

Blues musician Leilani Kilgore began playing guitar at the age of 9, a result of her childhood dream to grow up and professionally play music as a career. Starting with classical and ending (more recently) with blues, Leilani has studied under accomplished and skilled musicians that have helped her achieve multi-genre experience as a guitarist.

Her fascination with the blues began at the age of 16, when she met and jammed with local blues musicians who educated and encouraged her. Now a regular performer in Southern California, Leilani Kilgore continues to work at growing as a musician and make a name for herself in the blues genre. She is inspired by musicians both local and international, including Jack White, Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford, Gino Matteo, Chris Cain, Tom Waits, Son House, Jimmy Page, John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, John Scofield, B.B. King, Beth Hart, Etta James, Albert King, and others.

About the Performers

Hairbanger’s Ball

Rolling through the “Decade of Decadence” like a 50-ton freight train, iconic bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, and Poison (to mention only a few) made the 1980’s a musical era the likes of which we’re doubtful to see again. Millions upon millions of records were sold, and concert venues around the world sold out within seconds when these bands were announced as headliners…

In 2001, lamenting the heyday of hairbands, one Chicago band sought to rekindle the flame for these Gods of Rock by tapping into the nostalgic and undeniable energy of that bygone era. They called themselves Hairbanger’s Ball.

Born from a “what if?” scenario, Hairbanger’s Ball has entrenched themselves as one of the most sought after “80’s Hair Rock Tribute Bands” in the United States after years of performing sold out shows from coast to coast, all while exuding the same expert musicianship and flair for the theatrical as their idols. Now on the cusp of celebrating 15 years in existence, Hairbanger’s Ball has been a mainstay in music for longer than some of their celebrity counterparts, and routinely perform over 150 shows a year.

Whether you’re looking to bring back the memory of a favorite concert seen in 1985 or seeking a true-to-life representation of what a rock concert was like in the 80’s, Hairbanger’s Ball provides both the music and the mayhem for young and old alike, bundled together in a 6-piece, high octane lineup. Featuring powerful male and female lead vocals, some serious ax grinding and renditions of classic songs so much like the original you’d swear you’d gone back in time, Hairbanger’s Ball leaves nothing to be desired after seeing and listening to them live, which is why they’ve been named “Best Rock Band” in Chicago by their throngs of adoring fans.

In addition to traditional concert venues, Hairbanger’s Ball is also available for bookings at club venues, private events and parties, weddings, and corporate gatherings, having entertained heavy-hitters such as KIA Motors, Miller Brewing Company, AOL, The Phoenix Open, the United States Armed Forces, and many more.

WICYC

WICYC is a jam band who dabbles in almost every genre. From the Naperville suburb of Chicago, the band includes 5 life-long friends and 1 Craigslist discovery.

On drums, Trevor Wielert brings his own awesome style while always keeping his nose to the funk stone. On Lead Guitar/Vocals, Mike Sullivan shreds all over the neck with the utmost beauty and grace. Also on Guitar/Vocals is the one and only Patrick Mahoney, the king of Rhythm Guitar and has a voice that makes the girls go crazy. Keeping the low end in check, Alec Ross grooves on the bass with sweet fills and whopping beat-one bass-bombs. Filling in the middle of the sound with funky organs and synths and tight piano parts is Ryan P. Keane. Finally, the lead singer of the band has a voice like no other. Having so much soul, Cass Zander mesmerizes everyone with her powerful vocals! Together these 6 friends create WICYC and a fun loving community.

Vino has given performances in blues festivals all over this country and in Europe. He most recently headlined African Festival of the Arts – Chicago, IL, Salvabluesjazz – Mexico (2013-2016), Goodman Theater (solo performance) – Paris, France (2011). He has played with Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, the Black Crowes, and acquired ringing endorsements from many other musicians of renown. For example: Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant had seen John play with Otis Rush at the Jazz Café in London. When Plant and Kattke met in person at the United Center in Chicago, Plant told Kattke: “You play a mean guitar!” George Benson came to the jam session that Kattke hosts at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. After hearing the opening set that John played with his band, Benson told him: “You’re fearless! I thought I was fearless! You’re fearless!”

About the Performers

The Fat Babies

The Fat Babies are a seven piece jazz band interpreting classic styles of the 1920s and 30s. Founded in 2010 by string bass player Beau Sample, its members include Andy Schumm (cornet), John Otto (reeds), Dave Bock (trombone), John Donatowicz (banjo and guitar), Paul Asaro(piano), and Alex Hall (drums).

“Ensembles that play early-period jazz are in perpetually short supply, and those that handle repertoire of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and other pioneers at a high technical and artistic level are rarer still. That makes Chicago’s Fat Babies a band to be treasured, these musicians dispatching pre-bebop music with the passion and respect it deserves but rarely receives.” – Howard Reich, The Chicago Tribune

About the Performers

Trippin’ Billies

Born in the pubs on the north side of Chicago, reminiscent of Luther’s College, Trippin Billies took to the “stages” of these small rooms in the early nineties as an acoustic duo. It wasn’t long before lines grew to long for the small bars and calls started coming in from around the Midwest. As a result the band was forced to rise to the occasion, and they’ve done just that. Having the luxury of living in a city called home to many great musicians, Trippin Billies is comprised of some of Chicago’s best. This talent coupled with their mutual love of high energy performance has moved them above the bar band circuit and into concert settings. Whether it’s a club in Iowa City, a Hockey arena in North Dakota or a summer festival in Rochester, New York or Lincoln, Nebraska, the show is always the same, just that, a show.

Their tour schedules have come to resemble that of the Dave Matthews Band before their ascension to their current status. Midsize venues sell out consistently across the country and the famous theatres whose names were once inked on the cover of DMB boot legs listened to by the band, now comprise the tour schedule of Trippin Billies. The theatres they once approached with trepidation and awe have now come to feel like home.

Talent buyers need only contact the agent and request Pollstar box office summaries to see the drawing power of Trippin Billies. Many DMB tributes have come and gone but none have become such a permanent facet of the Dave Matthews Band movement and for that they are extremely grateful. The idea was to amass the six best musicians and create a concert atmosphere that leaves people with dropped jaws, eagerly waiting until the next appearance. They feel they have done just that. Crowds keep growing…. sound engineers vie for a chance to mix…calls from all over the US come in and people hit the website so much that the e-mailer doubles itself every few months. Trippin Billies is grateful to the fans, intuitive agents and to Dave himself for helping to draw attention to their efforts in national publications. Hopefully they’ll see you out on the road.

Chip Ratliff  & The DirtyBluCrue!

Although Chip Ratliff has planted his feet solidly on funky ground, he is dedicated to not just rehashing classic funk jams, but to taking funk & soul to new heights. This talented bassist/writer/producer’s music has all of the great characteristics of old school funk, but it also absorbs the best of contemporary soul, rock, urban blues, jazz, and hip-hop to propel his music forward. . . producing music he calls “HipFunk”! This has led Chip into a new chapter in his music career with the formation of his original funk/soul/urban blues/rock project, Chip Ratliff & the DirtyBluCrue! With this band, Chip takes his own ≈originality and talent, infuses it with the sophisticated funk and showmanship of Prince, the tightness of any one of James Brown’s bands, the grit and excitement of Chicago Blues, the extended live jams of a Parliament-Funkadelic show, combines it into one big pot and serves it hot!

Born and raised in Chicago, IL , Chip wrote his first song (along with his uncle, bluesman Fernando Jones who is only 1 year his senior) at the ripe old age of 6! Chip had no choice but to absorb the rich music scene all around him. Having a musical family didn’t hurt either. Chip’s grandfather played guitar with B.B. King in the late ’40’s & early ’50’s; his father played everything from blues to funk all night, every night on the family hi-fi; Chicago Blues legend, Lefty Dizz, is his cousin; and his uncles were accomplished singers and musicians. When most kids would spend Sunday afternoons after church playing outside or watching T.V., Chip (with bass in tow) and his uncles would have weekly jam sessions at his grandmothers house. . . either learning the latest jam or revisiting a classic cut until they were forced to shut it down! So, to say music is in his blood, would be a bit of an understatement.

Chip cut his teeth at the feet of Chicago Blues masters. Sharing the stage with a list of who’s who, including Buddy Guy, Jr. Wells, Lefty Dizz, Ronnie Baker Brooks, members of The Lonnie Brooks Band, Fernando Jones, the legendary Willie Dixon, and countless others, Chip gained invaluable experience in musicianship, performance, and composition that has propelled him into the dynamic artist that he is today. He has excited audiences worldwide with his sincere, high energy live performances, and exceptional (often dazzling) bass playing. He has contributed soundtrack work for films, scored a local television commercial, been featured on radio (WGCI, WXRT, WVON), television (WGN, WBBM, WLS), has created a mulit-media educational program called Funkoustic (fun-koo’-stik), and is founder of the New Rhythms & Arts Festival – a festival designed to showcase fresh new talent from the Chicagoland area.

Members of Chip Ratliff & The Electric Chittlin’ Stew are no less than some of the most talented musicians and vocalist available! They’ve played and sang with artist such as, R. Kelly, Janet Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Chaka Khan, and many others.

Bottom line: this band is hot and tight! If you miss a performance, don’t say you didn’t know!

About the Performers

Bumpus

There’s this album by Sly and the Family Stone called “Fresh”. It’s a sloppy, passionate record with all kinds of technical “problems”. The bass is all fuzzy on some tunes, sometimes you can barely hear the horns, and you can hear Sly giving the engineer directions a couple of tracks. Despite that, or because of it, the record is packed with the kind or raw soul that we could only dream of capturing.

Kates Brothers Band

Alex Kates, a native of Jamestown, NY, has traveled the country from coast to coast with his music for over two decades. Having mainly played solo as a singer-songwriter, Alex developed “Alex Kates Band” and the cover oriented “Kates Brother’s Band.”

Cousin Curtiss

John Butler meets John Popper meets Keller Williams. Cousin Curtiss combines the picking style, soul, and energy of John Butler, the incendiary harmonica style of John Popper, and the multi-instrumentalist-live-looping talents of Keller Williams. Cousin Curtiss’s life and music has been featured by Business Insider, MSN, Fox News and USA Today.

ESSO

ESSO Afrojam Funkbeat came to life in late 2013, drawing from the members’ shared love of dance, soul, and high energy music. Earning their start as the house band for a live music night in downtown Chicago, the rotating members collaborated live onstage until a solid foundation assembled. With a growing setlist of original material, co-founders and songwriters Armando Pérez and Kevin Miller recorded and released their first original recordings an online EP mixtape in 2014 via Belmont Electric Studios.

Catching the attention of tastemakers, promoters, and booking agents, they began to play bigger venues and festival stages opening for national and international touring acts alike. Continuing to write and record, they recorded and self-released their eponymous full length album on Pérez’ newly founded Sonic Octopus Recordings imprint in 2015. With their first LP in hand, the band toured through the Midwest to New Orleans and back garnering local and national attention.

Louisiana Al

“Alonzo Jones”, also known as ‘Louisiana Al’, 49, grew up in the heart of the south engulfed in the rhythm of the blues. His mother, Lucille Jones, was a gospel singer and his father, a dedicated jazz and blues enthusiast and fan. As a young boy, Al developed a special love for the blues that immediately created a connection deep down within his soul; a connection that he was compelled to share with others. As a young man, Al would sing Howlin Wolf songs to his dying grandmother and would watch as she raved with joy in response. It was during this experience, that Al gained the desire to bring joy to others through the rhythm of the “blues”. It was then, that Al learned of the magic of music.

Al would later go on to study under the legendary Killer Ray Allison of Chicago (2016), who was the first to refer to him as “Louisiana Al”. The name was a perfect fit and reflects Al’s strong, southern roots. Shortly after this valuable mentorship, Louisiana Al was finally able to form his band. Since then, Louisiana Al has made quite a name for himself performing in front of thousands at venues across the country becoming well known for performing the songs of Howlin Wolf.

Louisiana Al has established himself as an artist who controls the environment. Through the magic of his voice on top of smooth rhythms, his listeners are able to relax in an atmosphere where the daily concerns of life are long forgotten.

One of Louisiana Al’s goals is to open and perform for some of today’s greatest legends. He firmly believes in paying your dues and honoring one’s predecessors. He recently released his first CD entitled Louisiana Al & T he Bayou Players, Live which is already opening to rave reviews. Keep your eye out for this rising star!

La Tosca

La Tosca was originally founded in 2014 by Andrea Falcone, Davide Morelli and Antonio Valdez in the vibrant neighborhood of Pilsen in Chicago. Initially performing Italian classics and Latin American music, the band has since welcomed more musicians whose backgrounds have enriched the repertoire of La Tosca. The skills and flexibility of each of the musicians has enabled the band to explore gipsy jazz, classical, neapolitan, and folk music of different cultures and historical periods. La Tosca has also collaborated with rap and hip hop artists – through the Remix project among others – and is in general always seeking inspiration from all horizons. This versatility allows listeners to escape in time and space by imagining the Roman fountain in Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” or feeling the beat of Django in a Parisian 1930’s clubs.

About the Performers

Joanna Connor

No doubt you’ve seen it by now: That viral video of a woman onstage in a bright purple dress, playing one absolute scorcher of a slide guitar solo. That’s Joanna Connor in her home turf of Chicago, with the firepower she delivers to local crowds on a nightly basis.

That video has gone around the world a few times, getting millions of views and being re-posted in Japan, Russia and all over Europe. The viral phenomenon ironically happened while Connor herself has been off the road and out of the studio, devoting herself to being a mom and playing club residencies—not exactly laying low, since she does around 200 shows a year.

But a studio return was long overdue and “Six String Stories,” her first album in a dozen years, is the one that the fans who pack her hometown gigs have been waiting for. You’ll still hear the scorching solos– “Halsted Street” alone has enough wattage to light up a few cities—but there’s more to Joanna Connor than that. The disc’s ten tracks include tastes of gospel, rock, soul and funk; all with the gutsy singing and heartfelt playing that have always been her trademarks.

Connor wrote eight tracks with Marion Lance Lewis, a mainstay of her live band (playing bass onstage, but here’s he’s on drums and synthesizer as well). One of the exceptions is a live version of Elmore James’ classic “The Sky is Crying”—a quieter moment from the very same gig that produced the video. Credit the album’s diversity to her tireless live shows, which can go up to five hours on a weekend. “An audience wants to be taken on a journey, I have a pretty big catalogue of songs and you can read the crowd for what it wants to hear. I’ve been drawing a lot of millennials lately and as the audience gets younger, the music gets heavier—but I’m starting to do acoustic shows as well. It’s all part of the palette of what I do, and it’s always gone all over the map. When people ask me who I listen to I always say, ‘Oh, man. Who don’t I listen to?”

About the Performers

Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials

In Chicago, a city overflowing with unrivaled blues talent, world-renowned Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have been standing tall for almost 30 years. The band’s big sound, fueled by Lil’ Ed’s gloriously rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending, along with his rough-edged, soulful vocals, is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. The Chicago Sun-Times says, “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.”

Lil’ Ed Williams comes to the blues naturally. His uncle, Chicago slide guitar king and master songwriter J.B. Hutto, taught him how to feel, not just play the blues. Nine albums and thousands of performances later, Lil’ Ed is now universally hailed as a giant of the genre. Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials—bassist (and Ed’s half-brother) James “Pookie” Young, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton—have remained together for nearly 30 years (an extraordinary feat for any group), the band fueling Ed’s songs with their rock-solid, road-tested, telepathic musicianship.

Sonic Soul

SonicSoul is a Chicago band deeply rooted in the city’s blues scene but enjoy infusing elements of rock, funk, jazz and reggae into their original music.  In terms of covers, they hit you with a mix of groovin’ blues, house rockin’ classic rock and a variety of  danceable tunes that gets the crowd on their feet!

Each member of the band is a virtuoso and has decades of experience performing locally and internationally.   SonicSoul is a sonic force that captures the audience from the first note and leaves them wanting more with the last!

Mike & Joe is a modern rock cover band widely regarded by its peers and the industry as one of the very best sounding cover bands in the nation. The bulk of the setlist includes alternative rock from the 90’s through today, but occasionally they’ll throw in some tunes from the 70’s and 80’s as well.

The Leadfoot Band

The Leadfoot Band branches out in all directions, ncorporating their love of bluegrass with their early urban influences of rock , funk and everything in between, the evolution of the band is hard to place. Fans have said Leadfoot is just hard driving bluegrass, some say they are rock infused jamgrass, or even a bastard child of Bill Monroe meets Metallica. The online music site JamGrass.net even says The Leadfoot Band is “A mix between Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros and Greensky Bluegrass.”

Comprised of mandolinist Steve Haberichter, guitarist Mike Vanier, Garrett ‘Geebs’ Degnan on bass, drummer/ percussionist Mike Holtz, Andy Ohlrich on fiddle, and the new addition of Pete Smith on banjo in 2017, these seasoned musicians create a robust musical delicacy that tantalizes the senses and gets the feet moving. It is a smokin’ blend of styles suitable for any palette: funky, to pocket groove, to two-steppin’, to straight bluegrass/ newgrass, easy listening to acoustic rock fusion. Summed up perfectly by musician Jaik Willis: The Leadfoot Band is “Chicago’s freshest post-bluegrass served up spicy- just how you like it- with tasty grooves and lightning-fast delivery.”

The Leadfoot Band released their self-titled album “The Leadfoot Band” in 2014 getting national acclaim and voted a Top Album of the Year by Jamgrass.net. Along with guest musician Pat Sansone of Wilco on keys, the album features all original songs highlighting the diverse songwriting of the band. They are in the works on a new album in 2018.

They continue to win new fans over at every show and festival with their dynamic and impressive performances. They have shared the stage with likes of Sam Bush, Railroad Earth, Hot Tuna, Bill Nershi, Jeff Austin, Split Lip Rayfield, Sarah Watkins, Darol Anger, The Iguanas, The Radiators, Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt from Leftover Salmon and many more.

“Musical styles come and go, but occasionally the good ones come back sounding fresh and new. Bluegrass is just one of those genres that are sprouting through the cracks of our concrete jungle and it feels great! In this proud new high energy progressive blend, there is an excitability that is extremely refreshing. Leading the pack in (Chicago) is Leadfoot.” (Lumino Magazine)-

About the Performers

Kofi and the New Roots Band

Kwame Binea Shakedown

Kwame Binea is a self-proclaimed rocker to the core, but he has peppered his own brand of “Roots Rock” which embodies his fertile and cultural diverse personal saga; growing up in West London (his birth place) and his native origins in Ghana, moving later to Cherry Hill, NJ as a teenager before setting up home in New York City to unearth his artistic aspirations as a burgeoning singer/songwriter.

“Mix Rock and Roll with Silky Soul, screaming blues with folk and you get Kwame Binea” says The Apollo Theater. “My music is organic,” says Kwame “, it embodies life, love and  struggles. I’m driven by my mantra of Peace, Love & Positivity so that propels and drives the messages for most of my lyrical content. It’s also party music and danceable, so if our music moves you and makes you move, that’s a great night” he added.

In 2009, when he teamed up with songwriter/guitarist Justin Wilcox, his artistic identity began to really surface and flourish. Kwame transplanted to Harlem and they started performing covers and a few originals as an acoustic duo in clubs and coffee houses around New York City. There they built up credibility with their guitar driven acoustic live performances and also drew some attention from other NYC/NJ musicians playing the same circuit of venues.

Initially drummer Medley Shabazz joined the duo, then bassist Phil Bassaragh and guitarist Art Vanterpool. In 2011, the core 5-piece band started playing in clubs throughout the city. The band sometimes features horn players, Brian Varneke (trumpet) and  Kengo Yamada (saxophone).According to legend or myth (depending on who tells the story) the band earned its name Uptown Shakedown because the walls in Kwame’s apartment in Harlem used to shake when they rehearsed . It was later truncated to just Shakedown.

Kwame and the band  fed recordings and live endeavors with an unyielding spirit and intestinal fortitude that is strikingly visible in his artistic growth. They continued to draw a legion of loyal fans with electrifying and inspirational performances at most of New York City’s most celebrated venues including Brooklyn Bowl, Joe’s Pub, Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Aaron Davis Hall, Sullivan Hall, Shrine & Silvana, The Bitter End and a Summer Residency at the icon Arlene’s Grocery in the LES.

In 2015, was the released their self titled debut EP the guys would embarked on a national tour taking them from Vermont to California and everywhere in between. In 2016 the band would set out on the road to play during SXSW in Austin, TX then overseas on a 3 nation European tour hitting Netherland, Belguim and the UK. On their return states side a SOLD OUT performance at historic Apollo Theater music cafe.

Kwame and the band released their debut LP (Roots Rock N Universal Love) in the summer of 2017. The Album includes a stellar collaboration with Grammy award winning Guitarist/Producer Vernon Reid, the title song “ Universal Love” produced by Reid and written by Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Jimmy Cliff. Elmore Magazine writes ” Roots Rockin Universal Love is a delightful 40-minute jolt of caffeine for the ears, from a band ready to laugh and inspire in addition to bringing the party. Its the kind that lift we can all use more of these days”.  Look out for Kwame and the guys on the Universal Love Tour coming to a city near you.

The Blue Coast Band

As individuals, the members of The Blue Coast Band have worked with many of Chicago’s greatest blues artists, going back to the vibrant Chicago Blues Scene of the 1970’s.

The Blue Coast Band takes their traditional sensibilities of this music and puts their own spin in it. Years of working with blues greats as well as rock and rollers, gives them the freedom to intuitively mix it up.Their stamp on the music is one that is not over the top, but at the same time definitely not in a retro bag. It’s an honest interpretation.

Front man Mark Wydra is the band’s guitarist and singer. Most often associated with Eddy Clearwater, Mark has been a first-call side man for band leaders in-the-know for over 30 years. He has also played with Junior Wells and Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, Sam Lay, Carey Bell, and numerous others. Mark is a prolific teacher, and maintains a roster of more than 50 students. Mark also recorded with Eddy, playing on records like Mean Case Of The Blues.

Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers

Erin Harpe has been called “one of the most dynamic, talented and exciting roots rocking blues women on the scene” by Living Blues Magazine. Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, her Boston Music Award-winning band, just released their second full-length album entitled BIG ROAD – out on VizzTone! The self-produced album highlights Erin’s diverse influences, from her roots in acoustic delta and piedmont blues, to her electric side – slide guitar, boogie blues, funk, and soul.

In the time since the band’s debut album Love Whip Blues (produced by Dave Gross) Erin and the band have been touring the country nonstop – honing their craft, and making plenty of new fans. They’ve driven countless miles (Erin behind the wheel) and had numerous adventures, and also (as you can imagine) trials, along the way. Subsequently, Erin has emerged into the limelight, taking on a more direct role as producer and playing lead guitar. Big Road is an apt name for her new, self-produced album. It describes where she and the band have been, traveling the highways and back roads, bringing people joy through their music. It’s also the name of Erin’s favorite Tommy Johnson song, “Big Road Blues”, the one that Billy Gibbons said he liked her arrangement of when she opened for ZZ Top!

Erin’s soulful vocal style and accomplished finger-picking guitar playing has earned her many fans, including guitar great Ronnie Earl, and she is quickly becoming recognized on the international blues scene. In fact, Erin completed her first European tour in Spring 2014 and is planning to head back overseas in the next year.

Thanks to the underground success of her debut album project appropriately titled African Buttafly, and her equally powerful sophomore album project, A.S.E, (Afro Soul Effect), Ugochi has continued to create magnificent manifestations of melody over malady. Her third album, Love Shot, is available now.

Radio Free Honduras

Charlie Baran has lived a life of music.  Before moving the the United States he was a founding member of the legendary Honduran musical group Banda Blanca, who’s song “Sopa de Caracol” became the #1 Billboard Top Latin Songs hit in 1992.  Now a maintenance man at a Catholic grade school by day, Charlie has kept his musical flame glowing largely through acoustic solo performances around Chicago for the past ten years.

Charlie Baran is a true virtuoso.  No one sees him perform without recognizing the presence of a true master – an heir to a rich tradition of Honduran music, as well as a guitar slinging showman and a gifted songwriter whose skill transcends all genres.  But throughout most of his career he has existed in the shadows – until the formation of Radio Free Honduras.

Radio Free Honduras is a diverse collective of Chicago musicians, all united under one goal – supporting the artistry of Charlie Baran and bringing this tremendous talent into the spotlight where it belongs.  Founded by Dan Abu-Absi, longtime guitarist for JT and the Clouds and Birds of Chicago, Radio Free Honduras plays mostly Baran originals, but their live shows often feature a wide variety of reimagined cover songs. This band provides Charlie with the wide musical pallet his talent (and songs) deserve.  Abu-Absi has gathered a large, revolving collective of some of Chicago’s most talented musicians; lively percussion, eclectic instrumentation, and rich harmonies all provide the backdrop, allowing Charlie to do what he does best – stunning guitar work, tapping into what seems a limitless supply of energy and enthusiasm for music.

Charlie Baran has lived a long and storied musical life – but very few are familiar with his side of the story.  Radio Free Honduras has made it their mission to change that.
