He was a central figure in the golden age of Cuban music, led two famous big bands, and was one of the “house” arrangers for the Tropicana Club.   To celebrate his centennial, his grandson Chuchito Valdes will write arrangements for Bebo’s music to be performed by him and the Chicago Latin Jazz Collaborative, an ensemble with a rotating roster of local Latin Jazz musicians.

Korean Independence Day Celebration

Free Public Program

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 | 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park

A free performance presented in partnership with Global Pungmul Institute (GPI) & Asian Improv aRts Midwest(AIRMW).

Korean and Japanese drummers join forces to present a powerful program of ethnic and traditional rhythms to commemorate Korean Independence Day and celebrate unity and healing.

Appreciative members of the audience call out “Ul-ssi-gu joht-ta!” as they enjoy pungmul, Korean drumming. This simple, joyful exclamation ties together the players and the audience, binding them within the drumming experience of pungmul. The audience’s cries of “Ul-ssi-gu joht-ta!” and the answering rhythms of the players are an expression of community ties.

Project Ul-ssi-gu seeks to foster a global sense of community by designating August 15 for street performances of pungmul around the world. August 15 marks Korea’s liberation from colonial rule, and as such is an appropriate day to celebrate community through pungmul. As we play pungmul and engage audiences to cry out “Ul-ssi-gu joht-ta!” on that day, the globe will resound with drumming in celebration of culture and community. This is the 73rd anniversary of the National Liberation Day of Korea and the end of World War II. GPI has invited various Asian percussion teams to Project UL-SSI-GU 2018 in Chicago, including GPI’s SoriBeat, Chicago Pungmul School & Tsukasa Taiko.

Presented in partnership with Global Pungmul Institute (GPI) & Asian Improv aRts Midwest(AIRMW).

Join us at the Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park for a free concert featuring Chicago Afrobeat Project, part of Water Colors presented by CIBC, a live jazz music series co-curated with the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Chicago Afrobeat Project performs a homage to the Lagos music scene that developed the afrobeat sound in the 1970s when African musicians began combining elements of West African musical styles such as jùjú music and highlife with American funk and jazz influences, with a focus on chanted vocals, complex intersecting rhythms, and percussion. The term afrobeat was coined by Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, who is responsible for pioneering and popularizing the style both within and outside Nigeria.

About Chicago Afrobeat Project

Chicago Afrobeat Project

The Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) began 15 years ago. In 2002, a group of musicians sharing a common interest in West African rhythms that could be combined with Chicago house, indie rock, hip-hop, or jazz to form new avenues for musical experimentation. Today, CAbP has performed hundreds of tour dates, and released four studio recordings, placing them at the center of the emergence of the North American afrobeat scene. The collective’s latest release, “What Goes Up” features special guest and legendary innovative drummer Tony Allen, as well as many Chicago vocalists.  Drummer Brian Eno plays kit on all 10 tracks, recording his signature beats behind the band and vocalists. This collaboration makes Chicago Afrobeat Project the first American afrobeat band to produce a full-length studio record with Tony Allen.
