Special Attractions at EXPO Chicago | Navy Pier

September 17, 2012

Starting tomorrow, EXPO Chicago, the International Exposition of Contemporary/Modern Art and Design, begins its four-day stint in Navy Pier’s Festival Hall and art enthusiasts and philocalists couldn’t be happier. The show brings together 100 top art galleries for exhibitions and a number of high-profile speakers, such as New York Magazine art critic, Jerry Saltz, for panel discussions.

And if this wasn’t enough to spark your intrigue, EXPO Chicago also features a number of other notable guests and events.

EXPO may open its doors on Thursday, but it officially launches on Wednesday evening with an exclusive opening-night soiree, Vernissage, co-hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Art. From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., guests are encouraged to mix and mingle with members of the art community over food and drinks while taking in a sneak preview of many of the artworks are on display. Tickets, which benefit the MCA, can be purchased here.

Maya Lin on the Environment

Internationally-renowned American artist, Maya Lin (you probably know her for her winning design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.) brings her artistic grace to an installation focused on the Chicago River. Partnered with the National Resources Defense Council, Lin has created a series of pieces—like Reversing the Flow, a map of the Chicago River made entirely out of pins—that address environmental issues in Chicago and across the world.

For All You Foodies

EXPO Chicago also offers the chance to stimulate taste buds with its Chefs’ Café. Curated by restaurateur Michael Kornick (of DMK Burger Bar and N9NE Steakhouse), the Café will be located within the exposition and give visitors a chance to try creative, inventive food envisioned by four top Chicago chefs: Ryan Poli (Tavernita), Patricio Sandoval (Mercadito), Randy Zweiban (Province), and Graham Elliot (Graham Elliot, g.e.b., Grahamwich, and that terribly addictive reality TV show, MasterChef).

BIGart at Navy Pier

And if you haven’t seen our amazing collection of outdoor sculptures yet, make sure you take a stroll through our BIGart exhibition in Gateway Park! Edgy works by masters like Roy Lichtenstein and Anthony Caro sit alongside newer works by artists such as Alexis Smith and Almond Zigmund— they’re all definitely worth a view!
