In 2016, be not afraid of greatness. A global celebration four centuries in the making, join the entire city in commemorating the 400th anniversary of the passing of the greatest dramatist, poet, and playwright who ever lived! Shakespeare 400 Chicago will be a yearlong international arts festival in 2016 dedicated to the vibrancy, relevance and reach of William Shakespeare.
Spearheaded by Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Shakespeare 400 Chicago will turn Chicago into the world’s stage. This yearlong extravaganza will feature over 1,000 local and international artists. Sixty local and about a dozen international cultural organizations and entrepreneurs, including the Royal Shakespeare Company of Stratford-upon-Avon, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Shanghai Peking Opera, Joffrey Ballet, Rick Bayless and more will also take part in the festivities.
Shakespeare, a man whose influence is pan-cultural, is the ideal theme for such an event. Although he was a man of his times — writing for his contemporaries on topics that were the hot-button issues of his day — his prose, plots and characters are as alive today as they were when the plays were originally staged during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet and can recite lines from Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy. Moreover, it’s only human to experience love, loss, betrayal, war, humor and tragedy, which gives Shakespeare an unshakeable foothold in modern times.
Shakespeare will be celebrated across communities and throughout the city’s classrooms in 2016. Get in on the action and join fellow Chicagoans and the world in attending the over 850 events set to take place with Shakespeare 400 Chicago.
