Pride of Baltimore II: American History Sails into Navy Pier

July 28, 2013

When tall ships return to Navy Pier August 7-11, one of the 14 ships in the fleet is the Pride of Baltimore II.

Commissioned in 1988 as a sailing memorial to the original Pride of Baltimore which tragically sunk in 1986, Pride of Baltimore II is a 157-foot a reproduction of an 1812-era Baltimore-built topsail schooner. These types of vessels were known as Baltimore Clippers. Built for speed, the Clippers were much more maneuverable than the clumsier full-rigged British ships of the time and ultimately helped America win the War of 1812 and finally secure freedom. As a result of the Clippers, the British were halted in their land and sea assault on Baltimore during the 1814 Battle of Fort McHenry, prompting witness Francis Scott Key to pen “The Star-Spangled Banner”, a poem which became our national anthem.

Now, Pride of Baltimore is owned and operated by non-profit Pride of Baltimore, Inc. with the mission of promoting the historical education of Baltimore-built topsail schooners and their crucial role in maritime history and serving as a visual representative of American history and entrepreneurial spirit.

To date, Pride of Baltimore II has sailed nearly 200,000 miles and visited over 200 ports in 40 countries in North, South and Central America, Europe and Asia. She sails with two rotating professional captains and a crew of 11 and can accommodate six guest crew members.

At Tall Ships® Chicago 2013 at Navy Pier presented by Pepsi®, you can sail aboard Pride of Baltimore II in a four-hour cruise in the Parade of Sail on Wednesday, August 7. Then, August 8 – 11, Pride of Baltimore II will be available for Dockside Boarding Admission where you can come and board the ship and walk the decks, with a more intimate look at the history of this spectacular tall ship.
