Minsk 2011 | CST

January 30, 2013

This season, we’ve hosted several international companies at our outstanding Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

The National Theatre of Scotland came by in September for The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart and returned in October for a special presentation of Black Watch at the Broadway Armory. And just last month, the amazing British actress Miriam Margolyes brought her one woman show to the Pier for a week of performances.

Now we welcome the Belarus Free Theatre for a very unique production titled Minsk, 2011: A Reply to Kathy Acker for a five-day run from January 30- February 3.

Your first thoughts are probably what is Minsk and who is Kathy Acker?

Minsk is the capital city of Belarus and the setting for the play. Kathy Acker was an American feminist writer who wrote extensively about sexual identity and sexual domination used as a form of oppression; her ideas make for heavy subject matter, which the brave storytellers of the Belarus Free Theatre company delicately weave into a tale about their homeland.

Many of us know little about Belarus, an Eastern European country that has endured many years of human rights violations under a dictatorship. Minsk, 2011 serves to entertain and to educate.

The company knows exactly what oppression feels like; when the Belarus Free Theatre is not touring, their performances are given in secret locations. Here at the Pier, they’re given the chance to tell the story about their lost city in an open space. You will grieve right along with them as they lament the lack of freedom Belarusians experience within their totalitarian and sexually repressive society.

Minsk, 2011: A Reply to Kathy Acker is performed in Russian and Belarusian with English subtitles. It’s an adult work containing mature content, depictions of violence, and brief nudity so it’s suggested you leave the kids at home.

You won’t want to miss this powerful performance so make sure you buy your tickets now.
