Interact with History aboard Flagship Niagara

August 5, 2013

Adventure out, take history in. That is exactly what you’ll be doing when you board the Flagship Niagara. Niagara happens to one of the most historically authentic tall ships sailing in to Navy Pier.

The U.S. Brig Niagara is a two-masted, square-rigged sailing vessel and is an accurate reproduction of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victorious flagship from the War of 1812’s Battle of Lake Erie. In 1813, she had a crew of 155 men and boys who manned her sails, 18 carronades and two long guns.

The current Niagara, the third reconstruction of the original vessel, was launched in Erie in September 10, 1988 on the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie. Niagara sails the Great Lakes, preserving and interpreting the story of the Battle of Lake Erie and acting as an ambassador in her capacity as the flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As a sailing school vessel, her crew of 18 professionals and trainees actively preserve the skills of square-rig seamanship.

The Flagship Niagara’s institutional partnerships with schools have linked the vessel to some of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country. Students receive full credit for being onboard. All students and trainees are immersed in a historically authentic living experience that includes sleeping in hammocks and meals cooked off a woodstove.

You’ll be able to take in the authentic experience at Tall Ships® Chicago 2013 at Navy Pier presented by Pepsi®, while boarding and touring this historic vessel, August 8 – 11. Meet at the Niagara for dockside discussions including deaf interpretation on Thursday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, August 10, at 11:30 a.m. Dockside Boarding Admission is $25 for adults and $12 for kids (ages 3-12) and General Admission (see Niagara and the other tall ships in the fleet-up-close within the festival grounds) is $5 all ages.
