Gypsy, the Great American Musical, at Chicago Shakespeare Theater

tn-500_cst_gypsy_pre-pro_02_bybillburlinghamBefore Dance Moms, before Toddlers and Tiaras, there was Momma Rose. This winter, come watch as the original stage mother, Rose Hovick, urges Baby Louise and Baby June on to stardom from just barely offstage (and often onstage) in the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s rendition of critically acclaimed musical Gypsy.

From February 6 to March 23, Tony nominee Louise Pitre brings to life the most infamous of stage mothers as CST debuts Gypsy: A Musical Fable, a piece that has been dubbed by many writers and critics as one of the greatest American musicals. Loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of famous burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy focuses on the efforts of Rose Hovick to raise her two daughters to a life of fame and show business. Fueled by dreams of stardom for her young girls, domineering Momma Rose pushes her children to perform the vaudeville circuit—whether they like it or not.

Ultimately, despite Momma Rose’s aggressive ambition, Gypsy portrays the adversities of show business life in an affectionate light, and the musical produced many show-stopping tunes that have become popular standards. Featuring songs like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,” and “Together (Wherever We Go),” Gypsy promises to be a delight for the musical buff.

Hey, Chicago Shakespeare Theater has more than Shakespeare! If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to pay a visit to our fair theater, make Gypsy your reason. It’s a gem of classic American theatre that’s not to be missed!
