The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre is proud to introduce a compelling and lively new production of “Follies” featuring a company of over 40 actors and musicians beginning Oct. 4th at Navy Pier in Chicago.
“Follies” brings the book written by James Goldman to life as it captures the musical and spooky essence of a man in the 1970s trying to save an old theatre from becoming a parking lot.
Dimitri Weismann is forced to gather together the surviving players of his lavish pre-war Follies in order to save the Weismann Theatre, and before long, ex-showgirls are happily singing their old numbers, ghosts of everyone’s former selves are making appearances, and an extremely awkward love-triangle-related situation is unveiled.
“Follies” continues Chicago Shakespeare Theatre Associate Artistic Director Gary Griffin’s decade-long exploration of the Sondheim canon at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, an illustrious and inventive body of work.
Now, Griffin takes on Sondheim’s tale of ‘showgirls’ and ‘ghosts’ on the eve of a crumbling theatre’s demolition. When the legendary ‘Weismann Follies’ company are reunited decades later to relive their moments in the spotlight, they reveal the fine line we tread between illusion and reality – and the human follies that challenge us all!
The production takes you back in time, with the ‘ghosts’ acting out theatrical moments from the past, as well as interacting directly with the evening’s events as they unfold.
Can everyone pull together in time to save the theatre from being torn down, or are the musicals and memories soon to be a thing of the past? Come see for yourself!
Produced by Artistic Director Gary Griffin. Production will begin October 4th and go until November 6 at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre here at Navy Pier!
