July 2, 2012

New Art on display at BIGart at Navy Pier

Navy Pier welcomed it’s free, annual outdoor art exhibition, BIGart @ Navy Pier this past Memorial Day with the unveiling of Roy Lichtenstein’s signature piece, Brushstroke Group. Now through October, Navy Pier and the Gagosian Gallery plan to unveil more sculptures and works of art in the following weeks! The newest addition to BIGart is Nancy Rubin’s Monochrome II Chicago.

Monochrome II Chicago is made up of aluminum boats, stainless steel armature, stainless steel and wire cable. In Rubin’s unique style of art, this piece includes industrial materials and objects that were transformed into a monumental web-like structure that will greet you at Gateway Park!

Blazon and Galloon

Anthony Caro’s Blazon is also currently on display at BIGart at Navy Pier. This sculpture measures 139 x 113 x 59 in. and is made up of painted steel, making it a unique and colorful piece. This piece stands out the most for its bright red color amongst the darker steel sculptures on display.

In addition, American painter and sculptor, Steed Taylor’s Galloon will also be displayed at BIGart. Taylor, known for his public art projects created this work of art by painting yellow Celtic-like designs on asphalt and measures approximately 23 x 640 ft. This installation is not a sculpture, but a unique display of artistic ability that transforms a public asphalt sidewalk into an astounding piece of art!

BIGart plans to offer visitors a greater scale of art by showcasing monumental sculptures instead of traditional paintings and murals. The sculptures have a greater presence and overwhelming physical impact, and are all visually stunning. BIGart is always free and open to the public.
