Chicago Youth Shakespeare and Chicago Shakespeare Theater have combined their unparalleled talent once again for the high school Shakespeare slam, Battle of the Bard (BOTB). This year, the program expanded to include 50 schools and 300 high school students across the Chicago and metropolitan area, allowing them to perform their own creative renditions of Shakespeare’s canon in a slam-style arena. Building on the universality of Shakespeare’s ability to speak to all, student performances combine the playwright with experiences from their own lives, developing a unique culture of community throughout the Chicago region.
This isn’t your average student theater program, and is one seasonal event you won’t want to miss. The Final Bout will be performed by the nine top-scoring teams from the Prelims on Monday, November 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theater on Navy Pier.
‘Tis the season of laughter, joy, and everything in between. Spymonkey, the United Kingdom’s leading physical comedy company, will be performing The Complete Deaths from Nov. 30th to Dec. 11th upstairs at Chicago Shakespeare A World’s Stage.
There are over 70 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare, from Julius Caesar to Hamlet, and Spymonkey will be reenacting all of them with an emotional twist. While the performances of each tragic fate vary, humor is always expected. Swing into the holiday season with an inspiring and heartwarming musical event, Shakespeare Tonight!, on December 5. This mesmerizing marriage of Shakespeare and cabaret will feature top cabaret and musical theater performers from Chicago and beyond. Written by Chicago Shakespeare Theater Artistic Director, Bob Mason, with musical direction and arrangements by nationally renowned cabaret artist, Beckie Menzie, this captivating performance is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Shakespeare in a new light.
